Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market: Bangkok Day Trip Guide
Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market are two of the most distinctive markets to visit outside Bangkok. Because both markets are quite far from central Bangkok and visiting them independently can take some planning, I decided to book a day tour from my hotel. For me, it was not only an easy way to visit both markets in one day, but also a great opportunity to meet other travellers and hear their different experiences of Bangkok.
The day was a great mix of Thai food, local markets, sightseeing and shopping. I enjoyed walking around the stalls, trying different foods and looking for small gifts and souvenirs to take home. Combining the railway market and floating market made this one of my most memorable day trips from Bangkok.
Visiting Maeklong Railway Market: The Famous Train Market
The Maeklong Railway Market was crowded and quite difficult to walk through, especially with the railway tracks running directly between the market stalls. It was a very hot day, but the experience felt completely different from the usual tourist attractions in Bangkok. I enjoyed discovering the local atmosphere and exploring the different stalls selling fresh fruit, snacks and refreshing smoothies

Maeklong Railway Market: When the Train Arrives
The most fascinating moment came when the train approached the market. As soon as the warning was given, the vendors calmly pulled back their awnings and moved their goods away from the tracks to make space for the train. It was an incredible sight, and almost every traveller stopped to take photos and videos of the train passing so close to the market stalls.
What impressed me most was how calm and patient the Thai vendors remained despite the crowds of tourists. Watching everyone work together as the train slowly passed through the market made my Maeklong Railway Market experience one of the most memorable parts of my day trip from Bangkok.
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market: What to See & Do
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market was another fascinating floating market where I spent the rest of my day. One of the best things to do here is take a traditional boat ride through the canals, where you can buy delicious Thai food, fresh fruit and souvenirs directly from the local vendors. Some vendors sell their products from boats on the water, while others have small stalls along the canal banks, creating a lively and colourful atmosphere.
Taking a Boat Tour at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
What I remember most about Damnoen Saduak Floating Market was the friendly and genuine people. The vendors were always smiling and welcoming, and I really felt that I was experiencing a different side of Thailand. The busy canals, traditional boats and friendly local vendors created a wonderful Thai atmosphere and gave me plenty of opportunities to take amazing photos and videos during the boat ride.
What to Eat at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
After my boat tour, I was very hungry, so I stopped for lunch and enjoyed a delicious Crab Pad Thai It was exactly what I needed after exploring the market. To finish my meal, I tried a delicious fried banana as a dessert. I still remember the lovely Thai lady who prepared it for me with a big smile. Another Thai girl kindly explained the name of the fried banana in Thai, although the pronunciation was quite difficult for me! It was a simple moment, but one that made my visit to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market even more memorable.
